Medicinal Cannabis: The Netherlands


    Office of Medicinal Cannabis
  • The Office of Medicinal Cannabis is the organisation of the Dutch Governement which is responsible for the production of cannabis for medical and scientifical purposes.
    The Office delivers medicinal cannabis of high quality. The office has the monopoly of the trade in cannabis. Due to an international treaty the Netherlands are obliged to organize its Office this way. The OMC has also the monopoly on the import and export of cannabis and cannabisresin and the OMC decideds about the exemptions of posession of cannabis and cannabisresin.

    The OMC supplies the following products and services:
  • Cannabis for medicinal purposes:
    • In the Netherlands exclusively to pharmacies, pharmacy-holding GP's, hospitals and veterinarians
    • The OMC is willing to deliver also outside the Netherlands in case the autorities of that perticular country agree on that.
  • Cannabis for scientifical research.
  • Import and export of cannabis and cannabisresin.
  • Opiumact exemptions for cannabis and cannabisresin.

Together with the Health Inspection (IGZ) the OMC will supervise that the medicinal cannabis is not used illegaly.

The International Association for Cannabis as Medicine (IACM) is a scientific society advocating the improvement of the legal situation for the use of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa L.) and its pharmacologically most important active compounds, the cannabinoids, for therapeutic applications through promotion of research and dissemination of information. Medical Cannabis in the Netherlands
A change of the Dutch law on controlled substances (Opium Act) took effect on 17 March 2003. It includes regulations for applications regarding the cultivation of cannabis for medicinal purposes and guidelines for cultivating cannabis.
